“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).
Parents are their children’s first theology teachers. Our church families, great books, programs, and helpful media can assist and support our work but cannot supplant it. A mother and father’s love for the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:5) is to spill over onto the hearts of their children (Deuteronomy 6:6) as the family abides together (Deuteronomy 6:7). If everyday life together is the occasion for our diligent teaching of Scripture, then let us use each moment well!
Dolce Devotions is our family devotional time—it is our effort to teach our children “when we lie down.” We share it with you as an encouragement and picture for one way the bedtime routine might be used for teaching Christ and the gospel to children. May it stir up your own affections for Christ as you seek to love and commend Him within the everyday routines of your life!
